Dispersed generation is preferred to renewable recently due to economy and enviromental issues.
They have positive and genative effects on power grids.
Advantages: You can generate whenever you want to consume, so tranmission losses will become less. That is the technical point of view, plus enviromental advantages will be there as well.
Disadvantages: that generates two way of power flow that may be messed up with protection and overvoltages on some busses that needs to be controlled.
